Cummins was founded in February 1919 by banker William Glanton and auto shop owner Clessie Cummins. Today, Cummins is a global leader in the production of diesel engines, with subsidiaries in South Korea, Japan, South Africa, Mexico, Turkey, China, India, and 56 manufacturing plants in the United States. The headquarters is located in Columbus, Indiana.

- 1919 — acquisition of a license to improve and manufacture engines; the first 4-stroke engine was assembled in the same year. Dutch engineer Knudsen was invited to improve technologies.
- 1920 — promotion of products among farmers through the "Thermoil" catalog magazine, with 50% of profits returned to dealers.
- 1929 — installation of engines on Packard cars, which helped the company survive during the Great Depression.
- 1931 — speed records at the Indianapolis races, attracting major automakers.
- 1933 — release of one of the most powerful models for heavy trucks — the Model H.
- 1938–1945 — support for the US armed forces with powerful power units during World War II.
- 1950s — introduction of products in construction machinery — graders, excavators, bulldozers, tractors.
- 1954 — release of a new series featuring a unique fuel dosing system.
- 1999 — opening of a plant in the UK for manufacturing generator sets with capacities from 30 to 5000 kVA, with independent production of engines, automation systems, and generators.
- 2011 — launch of the first engine with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to reduce harmful emissions.
- 2013 — opening of an innovation center in Columbus, Indiana, for developing environmentally friendly technologies.
- 2021 — increased investments in hydrogen and electrification technologies.
